Southeast Asia: the eSIM landscape

Southeast Asia is one of the best regions in the world for travel eSIM quality β€” good coverage, competitive pricing, and major cities with genuine LTE speeds. The key is knowing which carrier to prioritise in each country.

Thailand

Best carrier: AIS. Covers 99%+ of populated areas including islands. True Move (merged with DTAC) is strong in cities. Speed: 15–60 Mbps LTE in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Islands vary β€” Koh Samui is good, Koh Tao is acceptable. Data needs: 5 GB/week for maps and social; 10 GB/week if video calling.

Vietnam

Best carriers: Viettel and Vinaphone. Both have excellent coverage in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. Halong Bay and rural areas are Viettel. Speed: 10–40 Mbps in cities. Old quarter Hanoi has variable signal in narrow streets. Data needs: 5 GB/week comfortable.

Indonesia (Bali and beyond)

Best carrier: Telkomsel. The only carrier with reliable coverage across Bali, Lombok, and outer islands. Speed: Canggu and Seminyak: 10–30 Mbps. Ubud: 5–15 Mbps. Nusa Penida: 3–10 Mbps. Data needs: 7 GB/week for nomads; 3 GB/week for tourists.

Singapore

Best carriers: Singtel and StarHub both deliver excellent coverage and 5G in urban areas. Speed: Some of the fastest LTE in Asia β€” 50–150 Mbps routinely. Data needs: 3 GB/week comfortable; Singapore has excellent free Wi-Fi everywhere.

Malaysia

Best carriers: Maxis and Celcom in Kuala Lumpur. Coverage in Cameron Highlands and Penang is solid. Speed: 20–80 Mbps in KL. Data needs: 5 GB/week.

Philippines

Best carrier: Globe Telecom. Smart has wider rural reach. Consideration: Philippines has some of Asia's most variable LTE β€” Manila and Cebu are excellent, outer islands much weaker. Data needs: 5 GB/week; download offline maps for islands.
