How to Use an eSIM Abroad
An eSIM lets you get mobile data in a new country without buying a local SIM card. Here is the complete process β from buying a plan to staying connected the moment you land.

Before you leave β buy and install
- 1Choose your destination and trip length at lte.app. Select a plan β you'll see the data allowance, validity window, and price per GB.
- 2Complete purchase. A QR code arrives by email within 60 seconds.
- 3On your phone: Settings β Cellular (iOS) or Settings β Network & Internet β SIMs (Android) β Add eSIM β Scan QR.
- 4Your phone downloads the plan. Name it something recognizable like "Japan Trip" so you can find it easily.
- 5Do not enable the plan yet β wait until you land to avoid accidental roaming charges.
When you land β activate the eSIM
- 1Toggle airplane mode on, wait 10 seconds, then off. This clears your home carrier signal and lets the eSIM scan for local carriers.
- 2Go to Settings β Cellular β tap your travel eSIM β enable "Data Roaming." This is required even for country-specific plans.
- 3Set the eSIM as your active data line: Settings β Cellular β Cellular Data β select your travel eSIM.
- 4Wait up to 2 minutes. Your phone will register to a local carrier and you will see the carrier name appear.
- 5Test with a browser. If data works, you are connected.
Keep your home number active
Leave your physical SIM active alongside the eSIM. Your home SIM will still receive calls and texts at no extra cost β it just won't be your data line while abroad. This is the main reason travelers prefer eSIM over buying a local SIM card: you never miss a call from home.
Manage data while traveling
- 1Check remaining data in the LTE.app dashboard β it updates in near real-time.
- 2If you need more data, purchase a top-up from the app. No new QR code needed for most plan extensions.
- 3Turn off automatic app updates and background refresh if you want to preserve data on a smaller plan.
- 4Use hotel Wi-Fi for large downloads (maps, videos). Reserve mobile data for navigation and messaging.
At the end of your trip
You do not need to do anything when you return home. Your home SIM resumes normal service automatically. The eSIM profile stays on your phone β for some destinations it can be reactivated for a future trip without a new QR code. Check the LTE.app dashboard for reactivation options.
